Deon Hauser • Journalled Emotions

The series “Journalled Emotions” won first place at my universities annual art show. By typing out random sections of my past ‘diaries’ on the IBM Selectric typewriters, I allowed a thin veil of exhibitionism to be exposed. With a bit of patience the text can be understood. Hours of typing yielded me yards and years of emotions and experiences.
On 20” strips of copper using a soft-ground, I laid my life out in consecutive strips of ribbon. Using a soft ground, the remaining carbon from the typewriter ribbon and plate fused from the pressure of the press. Removing the plastic backing, I submerged the plates in acid for a minimum of 6 hours. The intaglio process enabled the deep bites adding to the distressed feel of the type. After a couple other projects, several major themes of my journals of my youth emerged: rage, self-doubt, insecurity, envy, and arrogance. To emphasize these traits of the human condition, I incorporated chine-collé then inked and printed the plate onto BFK archival paper.

Perpetually Envious consists of two almost identical plates but one is purposely placed off register. The norm and the free spirit – which is envious of the other?
